DECEMBER 2007: IN MAZAR-E SHARIF OPERATIONS START
AT BURNS AND REHABILITATIVE SURGERY UNIT (BRSU)

French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, French Embassy in Kabul, Mutual Insurance Hospital in Pessac (Gironde), Bordeaux Rotary Club and Cargolux Air Transports all had their contribution in funding, rehabilitating, staffing and starting operations at the new Burns and Reconstructive Surgery Unit (BRSU) in Mazar-e Sharif.

A first surgery was conducted on December 5, 2007 by Dr Amin Hamkar and his team. The patient, a young boy from Faryab province suffering from post burn hypertrophic wide scars which caused him severe disabilities, benefited from a two and a half hour operation including release of contracture and plasty. Twenty some such surgeries were performed at BRSU (Burns & Rehabilitative Surgery Unit) before year end, and almost two hundred patients received treatment during the first month of activities.

H.E. Dr S. A. Amin Fatimie, the Afghan Minister of Public Health (see below left picture), inaugurated the premises on December 13, 2007. Various prominent personalities from the Balkh province also attended the ceremony.

This new unit allows dwellers from the provinces located on the North side of the Hindu Kush (six millions people) to receive treatment nearer to their home than the Kabul Reconstructive Surgery Unit or the Herat Burns Clinic.
